Top Five Friday: Mr. S.O.S. – Listen

If there’s one thing I hate about rap fans it’s the fact that they don’t LISTEN to the songs. Give people a beat you can move to and all of a sudden they have a new favorite song. Mr. S.O.S. understands this issue and made a song directly to and about those people.

Download it here.

The beat is the type that will unite generations on the dance floor. You know that uncle that’s in the church, but every now and then you see flashes of his worldly days? He would do his signature step to this song. LISTEN to this song and tell me I’m wrong.

And when you’re done, check out my top five people that have been affected, positively or negatively, by people’s inability to LISTEN.

1. Nas
If you actually LISTEN to Nas’ lyrics you’ll hear that he talks about the same things over and over and over again. He tells on himself in Kanye’s song “We Major.”

I heard the beat and I ain’t know what to write
First line, should it be about the hos or the ice?
Four-four’s or black Christ? Both flows would be nice
Rap about big paper or the black man’s plight.

Is that what a “hip hop legend” sounds like?

If Bryce Harper can wait, so can you

Buying into hype does horrible things. Hip hop bought into Nikki Minaj and look what we’re stuck with.

The San Diego Chargers bought into Ryan Leaf’s hype. Last I heard, the number one overall draft pick fled the country and is trying to start anew.

Mike Rizzo, the general manager for Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals, is not about to make the same mistake. He has Bryce Harper, last year’s top draftee, ascending the minor league system, scorching pitchers daily. However, he just announced that Harper will not make it to the big show this season citing his overall development as a key factor.

If more people made decisions like this, America’s murder rate wouldn’t be so high. Yea, I said it.

All too often, people jump into relationships because they got swept off their feet in the new phase. Before you know it, listening to him chew potato chips with his mouth open while in his drawers staring at Sportscenter makes you want to kill that man (Not kill him dead, Harpo. Just kill him to teach him a lesson and then respawn him).

Our instant gratification society has microwaved our whole courtship process into 20 questions on a dating website, 17 text messages, three booty calls texts, two phone calls and a partridge in a pear tree. We rush into things before we know what we’re getting into and then we’re too lazy to get out.

It’s not just relationships. It’s sex, too.

You know that sexy thing you’ve been eying up, picturing naked on top of a buttermilk biscuit? You catch that person in a bar, you talk about the current state of music and the 2012 election, take a few shots for the road, cab it to your place and do the grown up.

The next morning, you have 3 text messages from a number that’s not in your phone, but the messages, telling you how fun last night was, are a clear indicator of who’s on the writing end of these texts.

If you kept your zipper up for long enough to form a cordial relationship, you would have spotted the text-crazy, stalker-tendency red flags a mile away. Now, you’re subject to drunken sexual propositions for the rest of your life.

President Barack Obama showed us that he wasn’t going to do anything in the White House before we gave him the seat. During interviews and debates, when asked what he HAS DONE to prove he can be president, he answered with what he’s finna do. We all know what “I’m finna do” means “you ain’t gon’ do it.” But we bought into his hope and change before election time and now we just hope he’ll change.

Previous post: Barack Obama flames on Donald Trump

Show some restraint, folks. Find out what you’re getting into before you get yourself into it. People tell on themselves with their actions. It’s up to you to listen to what’s not being said. If Lil Wayne would have put the cup of drank down for long enough to listen to Nikki Minaj before signing her, he would have realized that she suffers from multiple personality and distorted self image (she thinks she’s white) disorders.

What are some other things that burn the people that jump in the fire too soon? Let us know in the comments section.

Ron Paul announces candidacy for 2012 election

Ron Paul, Texas congressman, has announced his campaign for the republican nod in the 2012 presidential election. Students of the Game has lots of love for Ron Paul and have been following him for years. Since a lot of people still are unfamiliar with the circus that follows Paul, let us give you an idea of what you can expect from now until he loses in the primaries.

1. Lots of young people and hipsters will cling to Ron Paul’s but won’t vote for him.
Ron Paul is cool, but Ron Paul is also republican. Republican and cool aren’t said in the same breath in the 18-35 demographic. That fear of not being cool scares people away from registering republican to vote for Paul.

Jewish newpaper edits Hillary Clinton out of War Room

Above is a picture released on the White House Flickr account of the President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other big fish watching as the raid on Osama bin Laden was taking place.

Below is the picture Photoshop-ed and published by a Hasidic Jewish newspaper.

Notice anything different? If you said there are no women in the second picture, you win the prize.

If this had been a Muslim publication, Americans would have been up in arms talking about “this is the exact hatred and ignorance we are trying to liberate them from.” But, since it was done by Jews it’s just a blip in the radar.

Why?

Joe Budden and Esther Baxter’s abuse allegation [opinion]

Rapper Joe Budden is in the spotlight again because Esther Baxter , his ex-girlfriend and video model, alleged he physically abused her while she was pregnant with his child (which may or may not actually have been his since she was creeping on Joe with Derrick Ward, runningback of the New York Giants) inducing a miscarriage.

I bought both of Joe Budden’s studio albums and downloaded almost all of his official mixtapes, but I lost some respect for him because of the inability to accept culpability of his actions.

Baxter explains, in great detail, an altercation between her and Budden in during this interview with Bossip.

In response, the rapper reaches out to another titan on the nigganet, XXL. He uses the magazine to clear up the air.

For the record, just so we’re totally clear, I never hit Esther. Never ever ever ever.

The interesting part of his attempt to exonerate himself from wrong-doing is that Baxter never claimed Joe hit her. She says he choked her and sat on her stomach. Budden’s defense is as pertinent to the accusation as O.J. Simpson standing trial for murdering Nichole James Simpson and, in his defense, telling the judge and jury, “Let it go on record that I DID NOT slap the deceased in the face on the day of the alleged altercation.”

Is Budden trying to prove his innocence, or distance himself from the accusations in the public eye? Either way, it’s not working.

The lynchpin of Regular Joe’s defense is the “common sense” argument.

Budden said it’s common sense that if he actually did beat Baxter, she wouldn’t have gotten back together with him after the supposed brawl. “You don’t do all the things that she says that I did and then come right back to the same man,” he said.

I’ve never been in an abusive relationship, but I do know people who have, and I’ve accidentally watched Lifetime movies. Those two things are enough to tell me that what seems like an easy decision to a third party isn’t cut and dry to an abuse victim. You need to try harder, Joe.

Lastly, the Mitch Bade Move award for 2011 goes to…….. Mr. Pump It Up for putting Derrick Ward on Front Street. I know it sucks to get cheated on, but you shouldn’t put the side-dude’s name into it unless you’re trying to piggyback off of his fame. Last I checked, Ward is second string on the Texans. What are you really gaining?

Take your lumps like a man, do some more pushup on the internet, broadcast yourself getting a tattoo that reminds you of what you’ve been through, #SubTweet about it, write a song vague enough that your fanbase can related to it and save face.

When is the mistreatment of woman going to be rooted out of hip hop culture? It’s so common that some people put the accuser on the same level as those that sue McDonalds after burning themselves with hot coffee. It’s unfortunate that abuse claims can be met with such incredulity. And, it’s even worse that rappers make music and money off of it.

President Barack Obama’s complete 60 Minutes interview

Riding high from the killing of Osama bin Laden, President Barack Obama appeared on 60 Minutes. Here is the complete interview. It’s 70 minutes of back and forth with El Prez and Steve Kroft.

When B.O. made his first attempt to be elected, he did a lot of finger pointing and blaming big government. Now that he is in command and in charge of big government, I see a lot of finger pointing and distancing himself from big government. It seems like Barry isn’t the change that Sam Cooke sang about after all.

Around 13:40, Obama admits that there were times that he lost track of the reasons he was elected and got caught up in politics as usual. It’s great to hear him admit his wayward tendencies, but when are we going to see a difference? When are we going to see change?

Don’t be surprised if the president’s re-election campaign is very similar to his first bid. But first, he has to absolve himself of all wrong-doing before he can blame politics.

Tech N9ne – Mama Nem [official video]

I told you Tech N9ne is one of my top five favorite musical artists of all time. Well, he is back with his first official single from his new project “All 6′s and 7′s” which drops, June 7. You see what he did there? June 7… 6-7. Catch up.

For those familiar with Tech N9ne, you notice the songs that leaked sound nothing like the N9ne that we’re used to. Fear not, faithful Technicians. He is connected with the industry in a way his career has never seen and is getting the video burn he’s been after for years. Have confidence in the man that has been giving us great music for more than a decade. He knows what he’s doing.

Top Five Friday: Musical artists by Landis

“Top five. Dead or alive. And that’s only off one LP.” -Jadakiss

It’s Friday. That means we’re almost in chill mode. It also means that you can count on a top five list from #SoTG. This list doesn’t have much to do with current events. I just decided I want to figure out my top five musical artists of all time. I’m not talking best rappers, best singers or best guitarists. This is all encompassing and is in no particular order. Except for number one…

1. Michael Jackson
This selection needs no explanation. Just enjoy my favorite MJ song.
Michael Jackson – Dirty Diana
